Ironbark Timber
Ironbark is an Australian hardwood renowned for its strength and durability. For over 200 years this timber has been used as a structural component in buildings, bridges, and docks. Because of its durability, Ironbark is ideal for weather-exposed surfaces and is often the preferred choice for timber decking and exterior cladding.
Benefits of using ironbark timber
Ironbark is a strong durable hardwood perfect for structural use and exterior applications. Its versatility makes it also a great timber for interiors and is often used for flooring, panelling, and cladding in homes and commercial buildings. Ironbark performs extremely well when exposed to the weather and another benefit is that it’s termite resistant. The timber can also be charred to increase durability and fire resistance. At Mortlock Timber we use a Japanese technique known as Shou Sugi Ban.

Applications
For over 200 years Ironbark timber has been used for heavy engineering and marine construction, but many architects and interior designers are now using it in their creations. Buildings that require exterior cladding, decking, or durable flooring, will often opt for Ironbark timber. Its strength and durability, combined with the wide range of colours and finishes available, make Ironbark an excellent choice for contemporary architectural designs.
Ironbark Products
At Mortlock Timber we provide a wide range of Ironbark timber products for both interior and exterior applications. Our Proplank click-in system allows for fast and easy installation of timber cladding, while our Trendplank system is best for concealed fixed timber cladding. Ironbark can also be charred using the Japanese technique known as Shou Sugi Ban, drastically increasing its durability and fire resistance. Other products include a variety of decking and flooring options.
Ironbark Finishes
Ironbark timber is available in a variety of finishes which range from a natural raw look to a glossier stylish finish. Choose between Unfinished, Clear Oiled, Unfinished Fine Sawn, and Clear Oiled Fine Sawn. Charred Shou Sugi Ban finish is also available and recommended for areas at high bushfire risk.
Colour Variation
Red Ironbark has a deep red heartwood with a contrasting pale yellow sapwood. It also has a fine and even texture with an interlocked grain. Grey Ironbark, on the other hand, has a heartwood that ranges from light grey and light chocolate to dark red and dark brown. It has an almost white sapwood and the timber usually comes with a straight grain, but can sometimes be found with an interlocked one.
Natural Features
Natural features such as gum veins can be spotted in Ironbark timber, and Grey Ironbark can sometimes have black narrow to broad streaks running through it. While Red Ironbark has an interlocked grain, its counterpart often comes with a straight grain. Both timbers have a fine and even texture which makes them ideal for interior and exterior cladding.
Ironbark Properties
Red Ironbark and Grey Ironbark have nearly identical properties which make these hardwood timbers especially good for exterior applications. Apart from its strength, Ironbark is also extremely durable to wear from the elements and in the past it was even used for marine applications. Termite resistance is another great property, especially for timber used in exteriors.
